From Bulbasaur to Meowscarada: The Rich History of Grass-Types

The Grass type is one of the original three elements introduced alongside Fire and Water in Generation 1. Bulbasaur—the Grass/Poison frog-dinosaur with a symbiotic seed bulb on its back—is the very first Pokémon listed in the National Pokédex (entry #001). Despite this prestigious position, Bulbasaur has historically been the least-chosen Gen 1 starter. This underdog status has made it a subject of intense passionate defense from its loyal fanbase, who correctly point out it is statistically the easiest starter for clearing the first few gym battles.

Game Freak has drawn from extraordinary real-world botanical sources when designing Grass-types. Bellosom is inspired by the Hawaiian hula dance and tropical flower arrangements. Roserade is a Rose Princess wearing delicate flower bouquets as hands. Carnivine mirrors the Venus flytrap, a predatory plant that lures and traps insects. Sunflora is quite literally a sunflower that dances toward sunlight. This close adherence to real-world botany makes Grass-types some of the most grounded (pun intended) and visually logical designs in the franchise.

The Legendary Grass-types carry especially deep lore. Celebi is the protector of forests and a time traveler, appearing in the past and future simultaneously according to its Pokédex entry. Shaymin can purify pollution simply by absorbing toxins and blooming flowers in devastated lands. These mythological plant spirits feel genuinely ancient and sacred, lending the Grass type a spiritual depth that balances beautifully against its cheerful visual aesthetic. The Underdog Titans: Competitive Grass Strategies

Grass-types may be typed disadvantaged (five weaknesses is a lot), but the competitive scene tells a different story. Several Grass-type Pokémon have been absolute metagame fixtures for years, demonstrating that clever ability design and exceptional move pools can overcome type disadvantages.

Ferrothorn is perhaps the most impactful Grass-type in competitive Pokémon history. This Grass/Steel grass ball covered in iron thorns spent the entirety of Generation 5, 6, and 7 as one of the most-used Pokémon in the metagame. Its combination of Iron Barbs (which damages physical attackers on contact), Leech Seed (which siphons HP every turn), Spikes and Stealth Rock (entry hazards that chip away at opponents), and Power Whip gave it incredible offensive and defensive utility. Ferrothorn is the gold standard for what a Grass-type Pokémon can achieve in spite of its type weaknesses.

Kartana—a white origami crane Pokémon from the Ultra Beast category—may look delicate, but it boasts a staggering 181 base Attack, making it one of the highest raw Attack stats in the entire game. Its Grass/Steel typing provides excellent defensive coverage, and its Leaf Blade on a Choice Band hits most non-resistant Pokémon for devastating damage. In Sun weather (from Drought), Kartana also activates its Beast Boost ability on knock-outs, spiraling out of control rapidly.

Rillaboom's introduction of Grassy Terrain in Generation 8 dramatically changed the meta. Grassy Terrain boosts the power of Grass-type moves, provides passive HP recovery to all grounded Pokémon, and crucially halves the power of Earthquake. This last point turned Ground-type Earthquake from a sweeping area attack into a manageable hit, reshaping doubles strategies entirely.
